“Upon seeing beauty one must smile. Our home is filled with that kind of beauty-from art and furniture to the walls and floors – we delight in how beautiful everything has come together. Each day we look around our home and SMILE. We especially love to see the smiles on our friends when they visit for the first time.” |

A terrific couple came into my shop some months ago. They both lived in a senior community and had found that “love can be lovelier the second time around.” They moved in together and with very little that came from their past, we embarked on a fun shopping spree to create a special home for two very special people. Despite the notion by some that after 65, life has no new adventures, this active couple knows how to enjoy life and they started with their new home. The floor plan of their model calls for the master bedroom to be on the main floor with two large upstairs guest bedrooms and a bathroom. They opted to create a master bedroom upstairs, as well as a “his and hers” office/guest room. That allowed the first floor master to be repurposed as a space for a T.V. /den hideaway with its own full bathroom. (The den sofa is also a queen sleeper for additional guests or if someone ever needs a bedroom on the main floor.) The eclectic design of the space reflects the modern taste of the two homeowners. While some of the art and collectibles were from their past lives, the look, overall, is fresh and new. The living room is light and sunny with comfortable and inviting seating. A custom wall unit provides for a contemporary electric hologram fireplace nestled within and shelving for display as well as storage. The dining room alcove is not large but the dining table can accommodate comfortable seating for a dozen guests when opened into the living room space. The family room is well used and is the hub for reading and relaxing as well as additional T.V. watching. The upstairs room which became the master is quite large. Simply done, it still provides for adequate storage and closet space. The “his and her” home office had a pair of kidney shaped desks when I began the project. At last furniture market, I found coordinating bookcases. By adding a really comfortable sofa bed, we now have a multipurpose room for all their needs, including sleepover company. Long Islanders most of the year, this great couple spends their winter months in a warmer climate. When on Long Island in their main residence, their home has become a gathering place for friends and family, and a place where two people who are very young at heart can enjoy life to the fullest. |
